Group Story

Warning: This story will not make sense at all and was never meant to.

Joy Cummings could make rainbows. Making rainbows was a hard job but luckily she had the unicorns to help her. Sadly, they had died a long time ago. Joy had killed them because she was hungry for unicorns. She also liked to eat young childrenBut in the end, she walked away from an explosion in slow motion with eyes as dark as night with fun fireworks, then she woke up and ate a nutritional breakfast of peanut butter toast. Then she went to school. At school she met up with her friends and made more rainbows. It was fun and joy. Joy took the rainbows and gave them a bath. Then Joy went around righting all the terrible wrongs she had done. Everybody lived happily ever after. Yay!!!

This is an excerpt from a story I’m working on, called Spectrum.

The ride to school should’ve been calm, uneventful, and generally soothing.

Apparently the paranormal investigators didn’t get the memo.

“Who’s in that car?” asked Dee, adjusting her rearview mirror to get a better look at the black van. “It’s like they’re following us!”

Joy and Timothy swiveled around in the backseat.

The men in the front of the van looked calmly back at them, expressionless behind mirrored sunglasses. The one in the passenger’s seat leaned out the window, a gun-looking thing in his hand.

Joy’s eyes instantly went from light gray to almost black.

“Lose them NOW,” Timothy said to Dee.

Something in the tone of his voice told Dee not to ask questions. She floored the accelerator and took a hard left. A gunshot rang out behind them.

“Who ARE those people?” Timothy asked Joy over the rushing wind.

Joy shook her head violently. “They’ve been after me since Pre-K,” she said to him. “Mom moved to the country to lose them.”

“But who ARE they?!” he yelled as Dee turned, the van closely following them.

“DUCK!” Joy shrieked, shoving him down as a tranquilizer dart fired over his head. It embedded itself in the headrest of the passenger seat, the blue liquid slowly draining into the chair.

The man swore and began to reload.

      “Dee!” Joy shouted. “Turn NOW!”

The babysitter turned into a back street, so sharply that it left rubber tracks on the pavement. The van sped past the turn, looking back at them angrily.

“They’re going to intercept us where we come out,” Timothy said.

“I know,” said Joy. “Put the top up, quick.”

The covering slid over their heads with a mechanical whir. Joy stuck her hand out the window, her fingertips shimmering with a blue light. She touched the side of the car.

Blue rippled outward from the place where her hand touched the smooth metal, enveloping the entire car in a matter of seconds. Joy pulled her hand back in and rolled the window up.

Dee’s jaw dropped. She turned to face Joy. “What…”

“I’ll explain later,” said Timothy. “Just keep driving!”
